Thursday Thirteen #45

thursdaythirteen300.jpg

There has been a lot going on for me recently. With my job change, a major move, and a new book all happening this month, my head has been spinning. I thought I’d share a few things that I need to accomplish in the month of October.

1. Organize My Daughter’s Birthday. She’s turning eight the weekend we are moving halfway across the country. That means I need to plan a party for her the weekend before.

2. Girl Guide Cookie Day. The same weekend as her party we also have to go out selling Girl Guide cookies. I plan on buying a box or two for our drive.

3. Final RWAC Meeting. I’m going to try not to get all emotional. This will be my last face to face meeting for a long time with this wonderful group of men and women. While I’m still keeping my membership, I’m going to miss seeing them on a monthly basis.

4. Wrap-up Old Job. I need to tie up all the loose ends before I transition into my new position. Only three weeks to go *eek*.

5. Move. Going halfway across Canada in a two day drive. I’ve done this a few times now, and know exactly how painful it is. My poor cat is going to have a fit.

6. Temporary Accommodations. We’re going to be staying in either a condo or a hotel for six weeks while we wait for the close date for our new house. Thankfully, work is footing the bill.

7. Start New Job. I’m moving into a management position. I’m really excited about the job and the challenges it will bring. A bit scared too LOL!

8. Finish Novella. Come hell or high water, I’m finishing that novella this month!

9. Plot for NaNoWriMo. While I won’t have to do any crazy writing until November, I still need to plot some basic things out so I won’t get slowed down because of a block. Being a pantser, I probably won’t stick to it, but it helped me last year.

10. Halloween. Candy…enough said.

11. New School. We need to get the kids registered in their new school. Because we doubt the temporary accommodations will be near where our home will be, that will mean we’ll have to drive them until the end of November.

12. Buy Doctor Who. This may seem minor, but I need to buy series one and two of Doctor Who. It was going to be my present to myself after the sale of The Bond That Ties Us. The book came out in July and I have yet to buy it! This month for sure.

13. Sweet and Spicy Spells. I need to start doing some book promotions for Sweet and Spicy Spells! This is the very hot novel I co-wrote with Renee Field. I hope you all love it as much as I do. And here’s the cover again for good measure!!

Thursday Thirteen #43

stga131.jpg

I’m so happy that one of my favourite shows is starting back up this week. I’m going to miss Stargate: SG1, but at least we still have Stargate: Atlantis to keep us happy! So I thought it might be fun to post thirteen of my favourite Atlantis quotes featuring Rodney McKay. For those of you not familar with the show, Rodney is a brillant scientist, who is a cocky jerk…and Canadian to boot! I hope you enjoy. :D

1. Carson Beckett M. D.: He fainted.
Dr. Rodney McKay: Oh there’s gotta be a better word.
Carson Beckett M. D.: Faint is a proper medical term.
Dr. Rodney McKay: I passed out from… manly hunger!

2. Dr. Rodney McKay: I’m sorry. It’s just… I react to certain doom in a certain way. It’s a bad habit.

3. Dr. Rodney McKay: I built an atomic bomb for my grade six science fair exhibit.
Lt. Aiden Ford, USMC: They let you do that up in Canada?

4. Dr. Rodney McKay: I’m picking up a strange reading from right over there.
Maj. John Sheppard: Define strange.
Dr. Rodney McKay: [pause] You don’t know what strange means?

5. Dr. Rodney McKay: [the team is trying to come up with a solution to a problem while being very short on time] You’re right. If only we had a magical tool that could slow down time. I foolishly left mine on Earth – did you bring yours?
Dr. Zelenka: You know, you’re not pleasant when you’re like this, McKay.
Dr. Rodney McKay: I’m always like this.
Dr. Zelenka: My point exactly.

6. Dr. Rodney McKay: Seriously, am I the only one creeped out by that guy?
Maj. John Sheppard: They’re politicians, Rodney – they’re all creepy.
Dr. Rodney McKay: Margaret Thatcher wasn’t creepy. OK – well, maybe a little. In fact, she was like an aunt of mine – same hairstyle, facial structure, only my aunt was much taller, and remarkably hirsute. Oddest thing: she had to shave twice a day.

7. Dr. Rodney McKay: Look, the first siege of Atlantis lasted for years. I mean, with only one functioning Zed P.M, we can’t expect to hold on that long.
Col. Steven Caldwell: Can we submerge the city again?
Dr. Rodney McKay: [sighs] It’s a city, not a yo-yo.

8. Dr. Rodney McKay: You’re referring to the ship you just shot down! One that doesn’t stand a hope in hell of ever flying again.
Torrell: The ship that you’re gonna fix, yes.
Dr. Rodney McKay: What am I, MacGyver? Fix it with what?

9. [Sheppard is giving McKay flying lessons, and they get into an argument]
Maj. John Sheppard: This is why parents get someone else to teach their kids how to drive.
Dr. Rodney McKay: I’m both insulted and touched by that.

10. Carson Beckett M. D.: [sighs] We believe ATA or Ancient Technology Activation is caused by a single gene that’s always on. Instructing various cells in the body to produce a series of proteins and enzymes
[McKay is staring at syringe]
Carson Beckett M. D.: that interact with the skin, the nervous system and the brain. In this case we’re using a mouse retrovirus to deliver the missing gene to your cells.
Dr. Rodney McKay: [Looking worried] A mouse retrovirus?
Carson Beckett M. D.: It’s been deactivated.
Dr. Rodney McKay: Well, are there any side effects?
Carson Beckett M. D.: Dry mouth, headache, the irresistible urge to run in a small wheel…

11. Dr. Rodney McKay: All I know is that she’s not who she’s pretending to be.
Elizabeth Weir, Ph. D.: And you know this because…?
Dr. Rodney McKay: What, I’m not allowed to have intuition?
Elizabeth Weir, Ph. D.: You? No.

12. [Sheppard and McKay whisper while spying on a Wraith in disguise]
Maj. John Sheppard: That’s her!
Dr. Rodney McKay: That’s the Wraith?
Maj. John Sheppard: Yeah.
Dr. Rodney McKay: Wow… She’s hot! I mean seriously hot!
Maj. John Sheppard: Rodney, you’re drooling over a Wraith!
Dr. Rodney McKay: I know, I… disgust myself sometimes.

13. Carson Beckett M. D.: You have a date, Rodney? With a woman?
Dr. Rodney McKay: It is simply two adults sharing some friendly… Yes, with a woman!

My husband and I just spent the last week and a half watching season three of House. We only came to the show this summer and have thoughly enjoyed it. One of my favourite things about it, is House’s sarcastic nature. I thought for this week’s Thursday Thirteen, I’d post thriteen of my favourite House quotes!

1. Dr. Cameron: Men should grow up.
Dr. Gregory House: Yeah. And dogs should stop licking themselves. It’s not gonna happen.

2. Dr. Gregory House: How does someone just start drooling? Chase? Were you wearing your short shorts?

3. [someone is groaning in the restroom stall]
Dr. Gregory House: Good lord, are you having a bowel movement or a baby?

4. Anica Jovanovich: You know, I was going to ask what a respectable doctor was doing in an OTB parlor… somehow, that question doesn’t seem relevant any more.
Dr. Gregory House: What’s your excuse?
Anica Jovanovich: Turns me on.
Dr. Gregory House: What else turns you on? Drugs? Casual sex? Rough sex?
[pause]
Dr. Gregory House: Casual rough sex? I’m a doctor, I need to know

5. Dr. Robert Chase: How’d you like it if I interfered in your personal life?
Dr. Gregory House: I’d hate it. That’s why, cleverly, I have no personal life.

6. Dr. Lisa Cuddy: I need you to wear your lab coat.
Dr. Gregory House: I need two days of outrageous sex with someone obscenely younger than you. Like half your age.

7. Dr. Gregory House: Like I always say, there’s no “I” in team. There’s a “me” though, if you jumble it up.

8. Dr. Gregory House: I’m extremely disappointed. I send you out for exciting, new designer drugs, you come back with tomato sauce.

9. Dr. Gregory House: I take risks, sometimes patients die, but not taking risks causes more patients to die – so I guess my biggest problem is I’ve been cursed with the ability to do the math.

10. Dr. Gregory House: I teach you to lie, cheat, and steal, and as soon as my back’s turned you wait in line?

11. Dr. Wilson: Did you know your phone is dead? Do you ever recharge the batteries?
Dr. Gregory House: They recharge? I just keep buying new phones.

12. Dr. Gregory House: Would the world be a better place if people never felt guilty? Makes sex better. Shoulda seen her in the last months of our relationship. Lot of guilt. *Lot* of screaming.

13. [House opens door loudly]
Dr. Wilson: Ahh!
Dr. Gregory House: Nineteen year old, didn’t want to hear the coolest explanation of why she’s going to die… begged me to shut up!
Dr. Gregory House: [slams the door]
Dr. Wilson: [cringes] Well, if you cant shut up, at least talk quietly.
Dr. Gregory House: [turns on lights] Anphedamine withdrawel’s a bitch. She thought, that I was HAPPY!
[stares at wilson]
Dr. Wilson: You were, happy?
Dr. Gregory House: NO! I was hazy! And I dont get HAZY on vicodin, or anything else I throw down… Which means, I was throwing down something that I didn’t know I was throwing down. And that got me to wondering, why didn’t you give me those HAPPY pills?
Dr. Wilson: I told you, you gotta be checked out by…
Dr. Gregory House: NO! You just didn’t want me double-dosing!
Dr. Gregory House: [wilson looks embarressed] YOU DOSED ME! Those coffees…
Dr. Wilson: They worked! You’ve been smiling, relaxed, happy!
Dr. Gregory House: A dying girl thought I was happy… a MORON thought I was happy! Who the hell doesn’t want to know she’s dying?
Dr. Wilson: House… was HAPPY.
Dr. Gregory House: HAZY!
Dr. Wilson: HAPPY.

Thursday Thirteen #41

Tonight I had to go buy school supplies for my oldest daughter for school. Now, I don’t know about the rest of the parents out there, but I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to school shopping. Love to get new “stuff” – hate having to pay for new “stuff”. Man, it’s freaking expensive!!

The teachers are also very particular about brands of school supplies, both for quality and equity reasons. So I thought for my TT list this week, I’d share thirteen things that were on my daughter’s grade three supply list.

1. 3 pkg. Hillroy Scribblers

2. 4 Campfire Notebooks

3. 12 Duotangs (2 each of black, blue, green, yellow, red, orange)

4. 6 Erasers (white)

5. 1 30 cm Ruler (clear and not bendable)

6. 1 pkg. 16-24 Crayola Crayons

7. 1 pkg 24 Coloured Pencils (Crayola)

8. 1 pkg Crayola Thin Markers

9. 1 pkg Crayola Thick Markers

10. 5 Large Glue Sticks

11. 1 Pair Scissors (pointed)

12. 20 Pencils (please sharpen)

13. 1 Highlighter

Oh, there was a lot more on the list. I think it came to a grand total of $55 dollars after all was said and done. The pain…

Thursday Thirteen #40

thursdaybanner2.gif

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was creating an alien dictionary of words, terms and places to help keep me straight when I’m writing about my universe in my series. At the request of a few people, here are thirteen entries from my dictionary. :D

1. Eurus: Planet that holds the Human/Briel colony. This is the main location for The Bond That Ties Us and book two, The Bond That Heals Us

2. Raqulian: This is a new race of beings that I’m introducing in Bond That Heals. Their people are born into a particular cast, and with it comes special abilities. They can choose to turn away from their calling and join another cast, but they can never truely escape their birth right.

3. Stocolran Gel: This is a highly dangerous bio weapon that is very difficult to obtain. It’s very difficult to find someone to trade it, even on the black market.

4. shara: Raqualin for darling or sweetheart

5. Joural: The main diety on Raqual

6. ravak: Raqualin for attack dog, a vicious animal

7. lenact: Raqualin for a rat type creature

8. atura beast: kind of like a sabor toothed bear that lives on Raqual

9. Di machachta: Briel for something close to “holy fucking god”

10. Nalaa: Briel for nose

11. Shrish: Briel for ear lobe

12. Rotha: Briel for throat

13. friken: Raqualin for fuck

Thursday Thirteen #39

thursdaybanner2.gif

I’m supposed to be editing my half of Sweet and Spicy Spells right now. I’ve only gotten through the first chapter because I keep getting interrupted! *sigh* Here are thirteen things that have stopped my editing flow tonight.

1. Had to put daughter one to bed. Okay, this one really didn’t bug me, but it still killed the flow.

2. Lightning. I had to unplug computers, TVs and everything else electronic to make sure they didn’t go kaplooie.

3. Had to put daughter two to bed. Again, didn’t really bother me, but smoked the rhythm of the section I was working on.

4. Sister called. Now, I don’t talk to my sister very much, so this wasn’t bad either. Just can’t seem to get this chapter finished.

5. Cat jumped on my lap. Now I love my little furball, but she was sitting in such a way that I couldn’t type. And when I put her down she’d get right back up.

6. Contest ended. I was running a contest over on Jackie Frank’s blog today. I had to drawn and announce the winner of a copy of The Bond That Ties Us at 8pm.

7. Nature called. Enough said.

8. Husband playing on the computer. Now when he plays, it gives me time to write. But he has a program on that lets him talk to the other people he’s playing with. I really need to move my computer so I can focus.

9. Indigestion. We had homemade nachos tonight. I love them – they hate me. My tummy is upset now.

10. Email. Now that I’m distracted, I check my email and had to answer a few messages. Chapter two is still staring at me, waiting for me to get back to it.

11. Another call! This time it’s my parents. Love them, apparently more than editing chapter two…

12. Myself. Now that my drive is gone, I’m distracted thinking about other things. This may be going nowhere tonight.

13. Thursday Thirteen. Had to talk to you all! And now I have no more excuses. Back to work!

As most of you know, my husband went to Comic Con in San Diego this past week. He had an absolute ball while he was there. I thought I’d share some of the pictures he got while he was away. There are a lot more, but some of them didn’t really turn out. I hope you enjoy them!

1. Giant Lego Batman

Thursday Thirteen #37

thursdaybanner2.gif

I just got back from driving my husband to the airport. He is on his way to Comic Con in San Diego, and I’m really excited for him. While he is going there for work (he’s a writer for a gaming site/magazine), there are a lot of things that he’s hoping to see as a fan. So my list this week is thirteen thing my husband might do while he’s at Comic Con.

1. Stargate. So not only are they going to be talking about the upcoming movie, but the cast of SG1 will be there. My husband is hoping to get a picture with Amanda Tapping. They will also have the cast of Atlantis as well. I’m so jealous!

2. Star Wars Day: I’m not sure how much of this he would get to see, but they will have author’s, comic writers and others there talking about Star Wars.

3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Apparently, they build a giant replica of The Black Pearl for a display. I can’t wait to see pictures of it.

4. Stan Lee: The creator of so many fun, cool characters I’ve lost count. It would be neat to meet him.

5. Sony: He might have a chance to go to the headquarters of Sony Entertainment to talk to some game developers. This is very cool for someone who plays a lot of online games.

6. Nicholas Cage: He will be there with his son to talk about a new comic they developed.

7. More comic book artists that you can shake a stick at: Way too many for me to list here, and a bunch I’m not familiar with. But it would be neat simply for the few names I recognize.

8. Ray Bradbury: Enough said.

9. Russel T. Davis: The man who brought Doctor Who back and the creator of Torchwood. Oh how I’d love to talk to him for a while.

10. Laurell K Hamilton: Admittedly, not someone my husband would go see, but I’d be there!

11. George A. Romero: Night of the Living Dead…enough said.

12. J. Michael Straczynski: Creator and writer of Babylon 5, and other comics. I loved B5 and think it would be cool to talk to him.

13. The Convention Itself: I’ve never been to a convention like this and think the whole experience/environment would be amazing. I can’t wait till he gets home so I can hear all about it.
