I have read a few books (and possibly seen a few movies) where the plot pulled me along in spite of flat characters... The Da Vinci Code comes to mind... But imagine how amazing that book would have been if we'd cared for a second about the characters, or if, say the woman (can't even remember her, she was so bland) had reacted AT ALL to finding out who she was.
