When good stories go bad

Okay, I’m the first to admit I’m pretty forgiving when it comes to the TV shows I watch. I’ll let them get away with just about anything as long as:

1. The characters are interesting and have a solid reason for acting a particular way, or doing a particular thing

or

2. The plots are well written and keep me guessing, despite flawed characters.

I think being a writer has ruined certain shows for me, or at the very least, has made me impatient when it comes to the absence of the above two points. Hence why I’ve officially given up on Heroes.

I mean…COME ON!! I loved this show first season. Adored it! Now, I’m so annoyed with it, the thought of spending an hour in front of the TV isn’t justifiable. They’ve changed the characters, INCONSISTENTLY! They have so many plot threads, and so many loose ones from last season, that nothing makes sense. I can’t care about a character that I won’t get to see for more than a few minutes each episode, and have them change radically.

/rant over

As a writer, this is something that I try really hard not to do. I love a good complex plot. I try to write them. I may not be the most brilliant author out there, but I try to at the very least be consistent.

So I’m taking a lesson from Heroes as I’m working on book two of my urban paranormal series. I’m keeping track of all the plot points I started in book one. I’ll make sure they are all resolved by the end of book six. This is my promise to you!

Now I just have to sell them…

  • Thanks for stopping by, Christine–great to see you again.. :-)

I know what you mean about TV shows. I have to make a point of turning off my inner writer/editor while watching them or else I drive myself (and my husband) crazy picking them apart.

  • You know my feelings on this. LOL.

  • Amen!
btw – check out that new show My Own Worst Enemy. When I saw the trailers, I didn’t think it was the show for me, but within 5 minutes of watching the pilot I was good and hooked. The acting and writing is stellar. Hope it stays that way!!

  • Daisy!! I’ve miss you, hon. :D

    Amy, I know. hehe

I saw the ads for that Wylie, and I think I might give it a shot. You should also take a look at True Blood. Very different, but very well done.

  • When I went to film school, all movies were wrecked for me for quite a few years. I just couldn’t take the Hollywood drivel, and certainly nothing on TV. Then ‘Gladiator’ came out, and that love affair with films reignited in my lonely breast.

  • Christine, I know exactly what you mean. I was watching NUMBERS and it was so obvious what the killer was going to do I couldn’t believe these so called experts couldn’t figure it out. Haven’t watched the show since.

LOL Julia, Gladiator ignited my love for Russel Crowe.

  • Julia, Gladiator ignited my love for a lot of things…

Oh Anne, I felt the same way about NUMBERS. I loved Rob Morrow and was really dissapointed when the show went a bit wonky.

  • C — isn’t True Blood on TMN? If so, I recently cancelled my cable so I won’t be seeing it until it comes out on DVD.
BTW — I bought the first two seasons of Buffy and just finished watching season 1. What a hoot!! Very snappy dialogue.

  • Yes, it’s on TMN. I recommend it once it comes out on DVD. And I LOVE Buffy. We just finished rewatching season two. Now we’re taking a break and watching The Sarah Jane Adventures with the girls. So much fun!
