Tonight I had to go buy school supplies for my oldest daughter for school. Now, I don’t know about the rest of the parents out there, but I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to school shopping. Love to get new “stuff” – hate having to pay for new “stuff”. Man, it’s freaking expensive!!
The teachers are also very particular about brands of school supplies, both for quality and equity reasons. So I thought for my TT list this week, I’d share thirteen things that were on my daughter’s grade three supply list.
1. 3 pkg. Hillroy Scribblers
2. 4 Campfire Notebooks
3. 12 Duotangs (2 each of black, blue, green, yellow, red, orange)
4. 6 Erasers (white)
5. 1 30 cm Ruler (clear and not bendable)
6. 1 pkg. 16-24 Crayola Crayons
7. 1 pkg 24 Coloured Pencils (Crayola)
8. 1 pkg Crayola Thin Markers
9. 1 pkg Crayola Thick Markers
10. 5 Large Glue Sticks
11. 1 Pair Scissors (pointed)
12. 20 Pencils (please sharpen)
13. 1 Highlighter
Oh, there was a lot more on the list. I think it came to a grand total of $55 dollars after all was said and done. The pain…

I always have to laugh at those lists when they demand Crayola or specific brands. I’ve found Rose Art crayons are cheaper and do not result in the teacher sending your child home for replacement crayons. I go generic whenever possible. It really does save money — !! I wonder if the schools get a kickback from those name brands for the mention!!
great TT!
Ack, I don’t even know what the first three things are! I agree, though, school supplies are terribly expensive. Our state runs a tax-free weekend in August which helps save a little. Happy TT!
I love the names of those! Hillroy Scribblers, Duotangs, and Campfire Notebooks! And I agree–very expensive.
Wow. They specify brand names??
But what BRAND & COLOR highlighter?
I was told to get a backpack and bring a healthy snack. That’s it for school supplies. I am not looking forward to shelling out all that money when they get in the older grades.
Boo starts Friday. I think I’m gonna cry.
I think I had a list like this a few weeks ago too! Sometimes, I wonder what teachers are thinking! (I was a teacher and had a similar type of list)! Haha!
Hillroy is a brand – definately a Canadian staple for school supplies. I had them when I was in school!
Campfire is a type of notebook. It’s a little half sized one that flips bottom up rather than left-right. They use them for spelling tests.
Oh! And I also have to send $6 for other supplies. *sigh*
On another blog I read about a list that demanded the students each have a $100.00 calculator.
That’s right. $100.00
Sooooooo, what exactly does the school buy?? Good gravy!!
Christine, I hated those lists. Always looking for something I couldn’t find. Having to buy expensive stuff that really wasn’t necessary or they didn’t use. And my youngest loses EVERYTHING.
I have to ask…20 pencils? Right off the bat? Now I can write with both hands and feet, and that still only comes up with needing four…and short of falling asleep at the sharpener, i doubt they will use up all 20 pencils. That’s just weird. (I know, you’re probably thinking, and the rest of the list isnt’?). Happy TT.
That’s brutal! My son’s grade 3 teacher had this – pencil crayons, 3 #2 pencils, 2 erasers, unbendable ruler, 1 glue stick, 1 scissors, 1 binder, 1 sharpener, and I went ahead and bought some duotangs for upcoming projects…
Grand total $13.00 at Zellers.
Wow! I can’t believe they have to be brandname. When I was that age, most of us had “generic” brand stuff.
Wow, and to think I was beginning to miss back to school shopping.
You cured me of that right off.
Sorry about the spending.
Happy TT

Wow, I’m only shopping for pre-kindergarten this year…guess I should start saving for next year now.
wow I don’t remember any specific brands being required when I was getting school supplies. That really kinda sucks. What about the kids whose parents really can’t afford anything but roseart?
*twitching*
You have my most sincere sympathies. There are few lists that suck worse than school supply lists, especially when you have to do more than one at a time.
I was in Walmart a week ago and took pity on some poor woman who was about THIS close to a nervous breakdown, wandering the school aisle raving, “What the (*%$& is a flash drive?”
Madness, I tell you.
THE PAIN! Ouch . . . =) And those lists just drive me nutty. You can never find all of it in one place. It frustrates me bad! =)
Wow this brings back memories, school was so long ago. I can’t imagine being back again…..
Oh yeah. I always wait until last minute and this year…there wasn’t a composition notebook left in any of the stores I went to! OOPS.
Hillroy Scribblers? Duotangs?
I’m hoping these are Canadian names, and I just haven’t been out of the loop this long!
My kids go to a creative arts elementary school. Let me tell you, we had some interesting school lists this year now that both of them attend Elm. No chance to cut corners when they ask for particular brands. Nor with them sending the list two weeks before school was there a chance of catching the sales.
Happy TT

What a trip dowm memory lane, Christine!
I remember those back-to-school shopping treks–from my own to my daughter’s. My mom had 4 of us kids, and now I understand why she was pulling her hair out and mumbling like a crazy woman by the end of that shopping day. LOL
I have not even heard of some of this stuff. Though I guess a glue stick is good, makes eating paste alot harder.
Yeah, I hear you. What I don’t like is when I can’t find something, or trying to figure out if it’s the right one. My son just started high school – so this year was the first time I didn’t have to buy glue and scissors. That was depressing. No more artwork for mom *sigh*
Whew! What a list!
*hugs*

My TT is at http://paigetylertheauthor.blogspot.com/
It only gets worse as they get older. Every year they request a different scientific calculator, talk about expensive.
Oh I don’t miss those back to school days!
Not too much, anyway
Great list!
Wow. They even dictate what brands you need to buy? Who knew?
Wow, that’s quite a list! I remember when I was a kiddo having to buy a box of crayons, but colored pencils and such, too? Very interesting!
Happy T13, and thanks for visiting mine.
Quite the list!! I bet it was expensive too, but it is so much fun!
Wait! By about grade 8 or so, they’ll specify what CALCULATOR your kids need. And it changes every frickin’ year, so you always have to go out and buy the latest TI97 or whatever. Grrr!
(But I do like that you used the list for a TT. Cool idea!)
Holy hell, what kind of hoity-toity neighborhood do you live in, LOL?! If my kids’ school sent home a list like that, I’d make it a point to buy generic everything just to piss them off. But maybe the fact that I’m still mad at them for canceling the school bus service is coloring my judgment slightly.
Oh Robin it’s crazy! And trust me, not hoity-toity neighborhood, but it’s the whole school district! The last school they went to wasn’t even close to this crazy.
Hey Christine,
You commented over at Maya’s blog about liking Robin Hood stories. That’d be me. Just thought I’d stop by and say hi!
I feel your pain. Though I don’t know the brand of some of your items, we have “brand” names as well. I think Crayola paid our school district off LOL.
The pain is right! Wait til you have to buy one of those scientific calculators. We start saving a year in advance for those darn things! Kidding, but I can’t believe how much a stupid calculator is. Great TT list, it brought back a lot of memories of buying Crayola Crayons. We loved Crayola Crayons in the T home!
Yikes. I can think of at least 13 things I’d rather have spent that $55 on.
Oh my. That’s incredible. And yeah, it’s only going to get worse. Uh, happy TT’ing? (I could have lied
my kids also have the same list… and i think more!
happy TT.
