Thursday Thirteen #37
I just got back from driving my husband to the airport. He is on his way to Comic Con in San Diego, and I’m really excited for him. While he is going there for work (he’s a writer for a gaming site/magazine), there are a lot of things that he’s hoping to see as a fan. So my list this week is thirteen thing my husband might do while he’s at Comic Con.
1. Stargate. So not only are they going to be talking about the upcoming movie, but the cast of SG1 will be there. My husband is hoping to get a picture with Amanda Tapping. They will also have the cast of Atlantis as well. I’m so jealous!
2. Star Wars Day: I’m not sure how much of this he would get to see, but they will have author’s, comic writers and others there talking about Star Wars.
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Apparently, they build a giant replica of The Black Pearl for a display. I can’t wait to see pictures of it.
4. Stan Lee: The creator of so many fun, cool characters I’ve lost count. It would be neat to meet him.
5. Sony: He might have a chance to go to the headquarters of Sony Entertainment to talk to some game developers. This is very cool for someone who plays a lot of online games.
6. Nicholas Cage: He will be there with his son to talk about a new comic they developed.
7. More comic book artists that you can shake a stick at: Way too many for me to list here, and a bunch I’m not familiar with. But it would be neat simply for the few names I recognize.
8. Ray Bradbury: Enough said.
9. Russel T. Davis: The man who brought Doctor Who back and the creator of Torchwood. Oh how I’d love to talk to him for a while.
10. Laurell K Hamilton: Admittedly, not someone my husband would go see, but I’d be there!
11. George A. Romero: Night of the Living Dead…enough said.
12. J. Michael Straczynski: Creator and writer of Babylon 5, and other comics. I loved B5 and think it would be cool to talk to him.
13. The Convention Itself: I’ve never been to a convention like this and think the whole experience/environment would be amazing. I can’t wait till he gets home so I can hear all about it.

Cons like this always sound like so much fun. The line up looks great. I think I’m envious, too.

I’ve never been to a US con but my abiding memory of UK ones was when leaving a con that I’d scored one of the door staff 100 points and won them a prize. They were playing a game where each visitor they checked in was worth points. The base was 1 point for overweight, black t shirt, black jeans and a beard. Apparently I was 25 points each for blue jeans and a red shirt doubled for no beard. I suppose it’s one way to survive door duty.

Wow…that sounds like a great time. I am sooo jealous. This was a fun T13.
July 26th, 2007 at 8:22 am
I’d be visiting LKH too! I’ve never been to such a con either. Sounds like fun, if I could forget to be an introvert!
July 26th, 2007 at 8:22 am
oh that sounds so cool!
July 26th, 2007 at 8:51 am
The star wars day sounds cool and I’d get a real kick out of the giant display of the black pearl. You’ll have to let us know how he makes out.
July 26th, 2007 at 9:10 am
At risk of sounding like a total non-geek, the con would be lost on me. I don’t read comics and not that into sci-fi. (please don’t hurt me)
Hope your DH has a FABULOUS time!! And just think - you don’t have anyone to steal the covers or hog the remote control for a few days
July 26th, 2007 at 9:13 am
George!!! God I’m such a weird zombie fan. I would KILL to got meet him, or raise from my grave at the very least.
If I were you I would have wanted to go too, C

SG-1 will be there! .. I’ve met Christopher Judge and Michael Shanks, but still need to see the rest of them.. grr..
July 26th, 2007 at 9:42 am
Very cool. Is it always held in San Diego? I think I recall it being there last year or the year before. I’ll be there next week and can’t wait. Hope your dh has a great time. Please follow up on this post and let us know what he actually did and did not see (and met and did not meet.)
Happy TT.

Nicholas Cage has a son old enough to develop a comic book?
July 26th, 2007 at 10:00 am
Very cool. I’d love to get out there sometime! I hope you have some fun as well!
Happy TT!
July 26th, 2007 at 10:29 am
I hope he has fun, it sounds like it’s going to be a BLAST, I told my hubby and he’s so envious of your hubby.
Hey wonder if Gene Simmons will be there with his KISS comic books. That guy cracks me up.
July 26th, 2007 at 10:44 am
Sounds like a blast, I’m jealous. Happy TT.
July 26th, 2007 at 10:52 am
I’m not much of a gamer or comic book fan, but this convention sounds like it would be awesome. How fun for your husband–sorry you’re missing it!
July 26th, 2007 at 11:02 am
That sounds like a lot of fun! And wowie, Ray Bradbury — he is one heck of an amazing writer and storyteller.
Happy TT, my friend, and thanks for visiting mine!
July 26th, 2007 at 11:28 am
Your hubby has a very cool job. I hope he enjoys the conference.
July 26th, 2007 at 11:44 am
Wow, that sounds like fun! And what a roster! A few people I know go to this con every year and they say it’s the best.
July 26th, 2007 at 11:53 am
A Star Wars day???!!! Man, I soooooooo envy him!
July 26th, 2007 at 11:58 am
I’ve not heard of many of these things, but conventions are exhilarating.
I am one with Wylie here.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:16 pm
Sounds like he will have a fabulous time!
Happy TT!
July 26th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
ooooh!
Call him and tell him to walk up to one of the Sony Developers and shout “PRE-CU FTW, dirty SUXXxXORS!!1!!one1!!” for me, will you?
(It will make him real popular, trust me)
July 26th, 2007 at 12:26 pm
ROFL Emma!! I’m howling here at work!!
July 26th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
My husband’s a big B5 fan, comic fan, sci-fi/fantasy fan - as am I! We’d love to go to this someday. In fact, yesterday I mentioned it to him, but said San Francisco. He said, “San Diego.”
Have you ever seen Comic Book: The Movie? Takes place at the Comic Con - I think it’s hilarious.
July 26th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
My son went to something called Archon last year. He had his picture taken with Darth Vader, R2D2, several other characters from different sci-fi things and some guy…I think my son said the guy’s name was Billy Wilder or something. I don’t do any of that stuff so I have no idea what he was talking about. But he had a great time and that’s all that mattered. Hope your hubby has fun and is safe there and back.
Huggles!

Well, the top of my list for ComicCon would definitely be the Joss whedon panel. Since I didn’t have the 10.000 $ to win a seat at this dinner with him, that would be the next best thing. ;o)
I’m officially envious of your husband. Hope he’s gonna have a great time.
July 26th, 2007 at 3:44 pm
Twice a year my son and I get all the Star WArs DVD’s and LOTR buy some pizza and popcorn and binge… hope he had a great time.
July 26th, 2007 at 6:13 pm
Mmm…pirates!
July 26th, 2007 at 6:49 pm
Sounds like an amazing business trip…hey I know a couple of guys (stand up comics actually) that write reviews of games…an unusual job so a coincidence. Do you guys have lots of games around the house?
I would love to do half the things on this list…been to a few comic book and trade shows, but it’s been awhile and how cool he’s in LA.
I am a Star Wars nerd…just watched the entire series last month, probably for about the 100th time. I never get tired of it.And… I’m huge Romero fan!
Here’s my TT it’s short this week, I am trying my best to keep it simple..

Sounds like he’s going to have a blast. Now, what are YOU going to do while he’s gone?
July 26th, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Thanks for stopping by today everyone!
Jennifer, I’m going to hang out with my girls and my parents. I’m already missing my husband like crazy, so I’ll have to keep busy. I’m looking forward to seeing his pictures.
July 26th, 2007 at 9:30 pm
Whoa. How cool is that? Hope he takes lots of pics!
July 26th, 2007 at 9:58 pm
OMG, that sounds like almost more fun than RWA National! Hmmm….
July 26th, 2007 at 10:48 pm
So many cool conventions, so little time. Someday, maybe.
July 26th, 2007 at 11:06 pm
well, well well, hold on just a second. Your lovely and smart husband (sucking up here) is a game programmer and I coincidentally am planning on getting an xbox 360 or a PS3. I think he and I should talk.
July 26th, 2007 at 11:07 pm
and Laurel Hamilton??? I would be in line right next to you
July 27th, 2007 at 7:07 am
Day-umm. That sounds like so much fun. I say we hijack the Black Pearl for next year’s National. How cool would that be?
July 27th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
Laurell is a little strange but very nice. You should try to catch her at a small convention where you have a good chance of spending some time talking to her.
July 29th, 2007 at 5:23 pm
I’d love to go to ComicCon one day. It’s got SUCH a great reputation.
*waves* Better late than never, huh?
