Sleepy Monday

Well Sven and I had a bit of a falling out yesterday. In order for me to get 35 pages this week, I need to write five pages a day. Needless to say, I didn’t yesterday. I managed three, which isn’t bad, but it isn’t five.

It’s totally Doctor Who’s fault. Damn him.

The good news is I only have one episode left and then we’re done. And after that, no more TV shows. At least for a week or two. ;) I’ll try and make up the two pages I’m behind today. It shouldn’t be too bad.

As I’ve been watching the Doctor and Martha this weekend, it’s made me wonder what it is about certain characters that really get to me. I’ve been hooked on Doctor Who since I first saw Tom Baker as a kid traveling around the galaxy. The character is enigmatic and charming, and just out of reach for his companions who grow to love him. In the new series he’s also a wounded soul.

It got me thinking about some of the other characters who have struck a chord with me over the years. The Phantom of the Opera, House, Robert Goren (Law & Order: CI), Jack O’Neill…they are all Alphas with a wounded heart. Apparently, it makes me gooey inside.

I’ve seen this coming over into my writing. Most of my heroes, while strong, are definitely wounded in one way or another. Mostly psychologically, but I’ve been toying with the idea of adding in some physical elements with an upcoming character.

As a writer, these are the types of people I like to explore. Not the boy/girl growing to man/women themes, but the man/woman who’s been beaten around by life and now has to make a change or be lost forever.

I wonder what that says about me?

  • That you have good taste! I always feel that way when I bump into someone who has the same tastes I do.

  • That you want to heal the world. It’s a woman thang.

  • It reveals the GMC tattoo on your forehead, if you must know.

And hey. Normal people are boring. Give me wounded, screwed up, angry, volatile, passionate people any day of the week.

  • There’s always something inside women who want to be healers, to be the ones to heal the hero. Not necessarily physically but mostly emotionally. We believe that we can the ones to change them, heal them, become their saviors. No wonder a lot of women are attracted to men who are disturbed sometimes.

  • Emma, you’re right about the GMC thing. I can’t help but think about what would cause a person to be like that and what it would take to “fix” them.

Wylie and Tempest, you’re right. It is a woman thing to want to heal everyone. We think we can make them better, or at least ease the burden a bit. It’s also very engaging to watch characters explore that process both on TV and in books.

  • You are an intellegent woman who isn;t just into the cute face and rock hard abs. A women Who isn’t afraid to go where other fear to tread and look for hte deeper meaning of love and humanity.

Men like House or Dr. Who are men who are complex but we take thier crap b/c the intrigue us and on a deeer level put us off balance and make us look deeper at ourselves and other, even when we are to afraid to seek the truth. All the while infurating and pushing the social dynamics and make us question our own mortality and morality.

Damn, I love those two Drs. :)

  • Gabriella, me too! Or maybe it’s the whole British thing. ;) I swear some days I was born in the wrong country. LOL!

  • That you look below the surface and don’t take people at face value. Wounded heroes are fun to both read and write. Maybe fun isn’t quite the right word, but you know what I mean.

  • It’s so much fun to read about those tortured heroes and fantasize about fixing them. In real life I run a mile from them.
