Thursday Thirteen #33
This weekend I’m going away camping with my family. We will be heading to Prince Edward Island for four days of fun and excitement. I hope to have some pictures to share when I get back. Before I go though, I have a pile of things I need to get done.
For this week’s list, I thought I’d post some fun things you can do on PEI. I got this off their touism site. Enjoy!
1. Anne of Green Gables The Musical , at Confederation Center of the Arts. See one of the best musicals ever put on stage, the famous musical Anne of Green Gables. It is a must see family classic.
2. Avonlea Village , Avonlea Village, in Cavendish. This is a good spot to visit if you are familiar with ”Anne of Green Gables” or any of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s books. This village takes you back to Lucy Maud Montgomery’s homeland where she grew up.
3. Charlottetown Mall. S hopping on PEI can save you money. Since there is no provincial tax on most types of clothing and footwear, everyone benefits from the 10% savings on those commodities.
4. Woodleigh Replicas & Gardens , in Kensington. Explore 30 replicas of the most spectacular castles and cathedrals of the British Isles, set among rolling hills and gardens
5. Ripleys Believe it or Not! , in Cavendish. There are only two of these museums in Canada!
6. Bike the Confederation Tail. What better than a great vacation the length of PEI that can be as expensive or inexpensive as you wish. Bike from one tip of Prince Edward Island to the other.
7. Outside Expeditions, North Rustico. Get outside and enjoy some sea kayaking or go take a ride in a canoe.
8. Pottery Hunt, There’s something about sea air that inspires artisans and PEI has no shortage of quality potters
9. Greenwich, Prince Edward Island National Park Parks Canada protects a rare system of parabolic sand dunes and sites of early Aboriginal and Acadian occupation dating back 10,000 years.
10. College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada, Summerside 100% Authentic-Heartfelt Celtic! A summer long Celtic Festival set amongst an institution, that inspires “excellence in Celtic performing arts through quality educational programming.”
11. North Cape, Home to a host of attractions. View the longest natural rock reef, walk the Black Marsh Nature Trail, visit the Atlantic Wind Test Site and see the North Cape Wind farm.
12. Sliver Bush Farms, Also known as the Anne of Green Gables Museum at Park Corner, this farm house is owned and lived in by George Campbell and his sister who are great-grandchildren of L.M.
13. Green Gables Original Site, The farm house preserved on the property was the home of Montgomery’s relatives and is apparently the inspiration for Green Gables of novel fame. The surrounding forest is the haunted woods that inspired Anne’s imagination.

I visited last in 1977 and vow to return some day. The island is enchanting - and of course, I was THE BIGGEST Anne of GG fan EVER.
Have a great camping trip!

Have a fantastic time, Christine.
I think PEI is the only Canadian province I haven’t been to… Also haven’t been to the Yukon. (But have been to both the NWT and Nunavut.)

I’ve always wanted to head that way - and yet I had no idea it was Anne of Green Gables land or they had a piping college. All those men in kilts, lovely
Have fun darlin’ and Happy Canada Day!

I was lucky enough to go to PEI just after high school with my choir friends - there’s nothing like new little baby adults having fun on their own! Before we left, we had a ‘champagne breakfast’ with strawberries in champagne and some orange juice. We thought we were awfully sophisticated… It really was a special trip, and we were doubly lucky because we stayed with a musical friend in her family’s old farmhouse - you guessed it, white with green trim. There was a narrow service stairwell that led to the former servants’ quarters, with a creepy rocking chair that reminded everyone of “The Changeling”. Especially during the thunder and lightening storm we had. We managed to see “Anne of Green Gables” and there was not one dry eye in the house. Beautiful and fun and a must-see at some time in everyone’s life.
Have fun, Christine! Can’t wait to see the pictures!

Are the Woodleigh replicas full size? Great balls of fire, even if they’re half size, that place must be huge!

The last time I was in PEI…which was about 25 years ago now, we went during the one year of the summer they weren’t performing Anne of Green Gables. So we went to Little Lord Fauntleroy instead and I loved it! I really need to get back to PEI for a week’s vacation. They have beautiful beaches there too.

I’ve heard lovely things about PEI; I’d love to visit one day (I have liked every bit of Canada I’ve seen thus far, including Windsor). I really like the bike trails idea; I’m a huge biker.
Have fun at Ripley’s; we’re planning on visiting the OTHER one next month.

I must be tired, cause I kept looking for the quiet place where you could veg out amongst beautiful scenery. With an alcoholic beverage perhaps.

Have a great vacation! PEI is on my list of someday to visit. We will be in Nova Scotia at the end of the month for only a week. Someday I would like to do a road trip to PEI. I loved the Anne of Green Gables Series.
