I’ve discovered the key to editing myself. Short sessions. If I sit down in front of my manuscript for long periods of time when I’m editing I tend to wander. Or worse, not read things as closely as I should. So my post on Thursday about procrastinating while I edit I need to revise and say that those were all good things.
That said, I need to get going and finish up this round. I’m on chapter ten of seventeen, so I’ll be able to finish up in a day or two. I’m going to try and get a chapter done on each of my lunch breaks this week, as well as a chapter each night once my kids are in bed. That will still give me a night to do another read through.
The reason I want to take my time going through, is because of the emotion. I’m trying to add a little more depth and emotion to the love scenes so it will carry through during the encounter with the bad guys near the end of the story. I think while what I had before was good, these changes are really helping.
I hope.
I guess in the end you’ll be the ones who will let me know.
Yes we will! So excited! And I’m glad you found your ‘thing’. A way to get your stalling under wraps. Good luck in finishing those edits this week.
Those ‘aha’ moments are what I live for.
Good luck with the rest of your edits!
Good luck with the edits Christine. You are an expert at time management – I wish I was better at it.
Sounds great! I love it when things come together just right.
Good luck!
Isn’t editing a book kind of like raising a child? I mean, writing the initial story is kind of like making a child (the fun part), then you got the whole raising/editing period (the sometimes not so fun part)..and you put your heart and soul into it..then it evolves into a…_____________.
Okay, I can’t finish the line (my 3 year old keeps interrupting), perhaps you can fill in the blank!

Tammy, I think you are right. It really is like having kids. Some are better than others at different stages. This story isn’t bad at all. My issue is everything else going on in my life right now. I’m just trying to keep my head above water.
The good news, I only have 50 pages left to edit. I might even get that done tonight!
Again good luck with the editing. Only 7 more chapters, woo hoo. I’m anxiously anticipating it. I hope to add it to my 50 book challenge!
The only way I can focus while editing is to do it on hard copy and not in my house. Don’t know why… But surrounded by other coffee drinkers in a Timothy’s or Starbucks I have far greater powers of concentration. And I make 40x more edits on a hard copy than I do onscreen. I also like being able to see the “befores” to make sure I haven’t made it worse
